Betty Jeanne Bingham's Bluejacket Genealogy

Waweyapiersenwa

The Whirlpool, better known as Blue Jacket by Indian and white alike, born in the early 1740’s, probably in Pennsylvania. His parents were unknown but he had a sister living on an island in the Maumee River below the Maumee Rapids in northwest Ohio in 1801. Last principal War Chief of the Shawnee Tribe, he was a mentor of Tecumseh and died in about 1808 on the banks of the Detroit River in Michigan Territory (at what is now Wyandotte).

M Baby

A half French, half Indian daughter of Jacques Dupéron Baby, a French Canadian trader and agent of the British Indian Service. Ms Baby was born at or near Fort Detroit, after 1750. She survived the Shawnee/Wyandot Trail of Tears and died in northeast Kansas Territory about 1843.

(2) George Bluejacket.

The third son and fifth child of Blue Jacket and Ms Baby (Blue Jacket produced a boy and girl with another wife), George was born in about 1881 at one of the Blue Jacket’s Towns in the northwest of Ohio country. Along with brother James, he was a collaborator with Tecumseh in the latter’s failed attempts to rid the Great Lakes region of Americans. George died at Piqua, Ohio about 1829.

M Spouse Unknown

This wife was very likely a Shawnee but no details have surfaced.

(3) Henry Bluejacket

When Henry was born is unknown, therefore, he may or may not have been the first of George’s brood. He likely was born at Blue Jacket’s Town, north of the Huron River and west of the Detroit River in southeastern Michigan Territory near Brownstown. Henry went to Washington DC in 1854 where he signed the Shawnee Treaty with his brothers George and Charles. His last child was born after Henry died at Bluejacket’s Crossing of the Wakarusa River in 1855, now in Johnson County, Kansas City, Kansas.

M Eliza

Born about 1818, she married Henry on March 16, 1843 but their apparent first child was born in 1838. Eliza had been married before as she had a son, George Sarcoxie, born in 1836 but was raised in the Bluejacket household and used the Bluejacket name. Her Indian name was Cho-wa-pea and she died about 1865.

(4) Stephen S. Bluejacket

Stephen was born in 1838 in northeastern Kansas Territory. He was in Co. D, 17th Regiment, Kansas Voluntary Infantry in 1864. In 1871 these Shawnees migrated to Indian Territory, establishing farms near Bluejacket Station on the MKT railroad. Stephen later operated Bluejacket Hotel in Vinita, I. T. On Card No. 3458 of the Dawes Roll, he is listed as ½ blood Adopted Shawnee. Stephen died on November 8, 1901. His Indian name was Wa-wa-latj-kah-ka.

M Emily Tiblow

Emily was born on June 17, 1841 in Kansas Territory and died on June 30, 1896 in Vinita I. T. The marriage date with Stephen is unknown. Her Indian name was Me-swa-pe-a-se and she was called Spotted Fawn. Emily had first married John Silverheels and they had a daughter Frances.
