Two new publications are definitive histories of Blue Jacket and the
Shawnees and should be your arm chair references when studying this
family:
Noe,
Randolph, 2001, THE SHAWNEE INDIANS, An Annotated
Bibliography, Scarecrow Press, Lanham, 721 p. ISBN 0-8108-3894-X.
Sugden,
John, 2000, Blue Jacket, Warrior of the Shawnees, University of
Nebraska Press, Lincoln, 350 p. ISBN 0-8032-4288-3.
(1)Waweyapiersenwaw
– the last principal War Chief of the
Shawnee Tribe. The Whirlpool, he was one of the greatest native American
leaders, perhaps more so than Tecumseh, a pupil of his. He originally
bore the Shawnee Indian name Sepettekenathe, Big Rabbit. Before 1778, he
had chosen to use Waweyapiersenwa, which was recorded by Jasper Yates
and Col. John Montgomery (Pennsylvania Magazine of History and
Biography, Vol. 5, pp. 484-485.) as one of the tribal representatives
present at the signing of the Treaty of Fort Pitt in that year. The same
name is affixed to the Treaty of Green Ville in 1795. A third name,
Sasesequa was passed by James Galloway in his letter to Benjamin Drake
in 1839 (Draper Manuscripts, BJ245-259.). Most common however, was Blue
Jacket, used by Indian and white alike, which is how Minister
David Jones described him in a visit to Shawnee villages along the
Scioto River in 1772 – 1773.
Born about (ca) 1740 to unknown Shawnee parents, probably in
Pennsylvania, Blue Jacket married (360) Margaret (Peggy) Moore, a
Virginia English girl. Margaret had been captured during the French
& Indian War along with her sister, ca 1759. Margaret was about 9 at
the time. The Chief died, probably in 1808 and, probably, on the banks
of the Detroit River in Michigan Territory at what is now the town of
Wyandotte. Margaret gave birth to Nancy in Virginia, after having
returned to her original home for a visit, however, she never
reactivated her life with Blue Jacket. Margaret died after 1810 in Ohio.

FIRST GENERATION
Another, more productive wife, was a girl sired by Jacques Dupéron
Baby of a Detroit River area trading family. Susanne Réaume was
the career wife of Dupéron Baby and reportedly bore him 20
children, but this daughter of his was from an Indian woman. Her given
name is unknown. (2) Ms Baby survived the Indian removal trek with her
son James and his family, who accompanied Wyandots to northeast Kansas
Terr. in 1853 and she died there. Ms Baby very likely lived to the
century mark.

Red Pole is believed to be a half brother to Blue Jacket. With a
father from the Mekoche division, Red Pole was a civil chief and a great
spokesman for the Tribe after the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. Blue
Jacket, having a father from the Pekowi division, was a war chief and
led the Tribe during the warring period of the last half of the 1780’s
and first half of the 1790’s.
Blue Jacket had a sister who was living on an island below the Maumee
Rapids in 1801. (Story of the Maumee Valley, Toledo and the Sandusky
Region by VanTassel.)

SECOND GENERATION
(361) Joseph
Moore, son of Blue Jacket and Margaret
Moore, likely was born in Blue Jackets Town on Deer Creek, a tributary
of the Scioto River. On 2 Oct.1810, land was granted to half-blood
Joseph Moore by leaders of the Shawnee Tribe of Wapaughkonetta. The
grant was for 640 acres on the west bank of the Miami River. The land
could be passed to Joseph's lawful heirs but neither had the power to
sell or give it away. No heirs were produced so the tract was not
ratified in the treaty of 1817, as was his sister Nancy’s similar
grant. The record of this grant is found in Deed Book B, pg. 313-314,
Champaign Co., Ohio. The property is in present day Logan Co., Ohio.
Joseph was observed alive in 1813.
Blue Jacket had two sons who died in the War of 1812 conflict. One of
these was killed in the Battle of Brownstown (Michigan). According to
the book, War on the Detroit, The Chronicles of, Thomas Vercheres de
Boucherville, edited by Milo Milton, Quaiffe, p.89-93, a young Shawnee
named Blue Jacket killed a cavalry officer and was then killed by another
cavalryman. His head was almost completely severed from his body.
Whether this was Joseph or not is uncertain.
(362) Nancy
Moore, daughter of Blue Jacket and Margaret Moore, was born
in Hampshire Co., Virginia, possibly as late as the 1773/1774 winter and
married (363) James Stewart. Nancy died in Nov 1840 in Ohio and
was buried in Muddy Run Cem. Logan Co., Ohio. James died May 1830 in
Logan Co., Ohio and was buried in Muddy Run Cemetery. Logan Co., Ohio.
Nancy’s land tract, as above, was on the east bank of the Miami River,
across from Joseph’s. The grant reserved a Right of Dower to Margaret
Moore, the mother of Nancy and Joseph. It would appear that the Indians
thought a great deal of Margaret Moore and wanted to be sure that she be
taken care of. She and her husband were granted approval to sell the
Miami land in 1820.

(3) James
Blue Jacket, son of Blue Jacket and Ms Baby,
was born in the 1765 – 1768 period (two sources), probably in Blue
Jacket’s Town on Deer Creek, a tributary of the Scioto River and
married a Wyandot on the banks of the Detroit River. James died about
1845 in KS Terr. His Indian name was Thucuscu. The Indian name
Teawascoota is recorded on the Treaty’s of 1814 and of 1817. On the
Shawnee Trail of Tears, his wife died in Aug 1843, in Kansas Landing MO.
James and younger brother George were staunch and respected activists in
Tecumseh’s magnificent but failed attempts to wipe the former
Algonquian tribal homelands clean of Americans.
Children:
7*Nancy Blue Jacket b. late 1700’s d. Apr 1876
1323*James (Jim) Blue Jacket b. late 1700’s d. ca 1848
(1327) Unknown Blue Jacket,
son of Blue Jacket and Ms Baby is said to have died Apr 1792.
Reference to this child is found in Draper Mms. 8BB106-108. He was
captured by a group of white men and shot through the head. He is
described as a large, fine looking Indian.
The papers of Norma Lee Luallen, in which much of the documentation
for the Blue Jacket family genealogy resides, is archived by the Rapides
Parish Library in Alexandria Louisiana. Should some enterprising soul
wish to look this entry up, we would be overjoyed. Jean Meek is going
through her files preparing to get them into a safe haven. Marylen
Williams collaborated closely with Norma Lee and has nearly all her
stuff but has no time to deal with it. Virginia Slack’s files are
intact through her husband’s effort but it is not known what will
happen to them.
(4) Mary Blue Jacket, daughter
of Blue Jacket and Ms Baby, was born about 1775 and married (6) Jacques
Lasselle (Lacelle) on 29 Mar 1801 in Detroit, MI Terr. by Fr. Gabriel
Richard, pastor of St. Anne’s Church. Jacques was born in 1767. St.
Anne’s records show that "Marie Louise of the Nation of the
Shawanons, spouse of Jacques Laselle" died 16 Jun 1806 in Detroit,
Michigan Terr. and was buried 17 Jun 1806. Jacques died 3 Dec 1815 and
was buried in St. Antoine, River Raisen, MI Terr. Mary Blue Jacket's
birth date is from the John Askin Papers, edited by Milo M. Quaife, Vol.
2, page 34 (note 62). Although her legal marriage date is 1801, she was
apparently married prior to that time in an Indian ceremony. Jacques
Lasselle is referred to as the son-in-law of Blue Jacket as early as 1793
and as the brother-in-law of George Blue Jacket in 1820. Jacques was the
son of Jacques Lasselle and Teresa Berthelot dit Savoyard.

"After looking over the Death Record of Mary Blue Jacket, which
is all in French, I’m pretty sure it says that she died
"yesterday", meaning 16 Jun. The 17th of June is
the date entered in the Church Death Records as the day she was buried,
and that is the date anyone would find it under if they were searching
the records." (MMcG).

SECOND GENERATION
(1395) Sally Blue Jacket,
daughter of Blue Jacket and Ms Baby was born ca 1778 and married Capt.
William Charles Short of the British Twenty-fourth Regiment of Foot, in
1794 or 1795. His outfit was at the British fort on the Maumee River.
The good (no so?) Capt. returned to England leaving Sally with a son and
she later married a Wilson, a union that produced no children. Coming
back to Canada, now a Lt. Col., Short fought and died (Jun 1813) in the
War of 1812, leaving a different wife by no design of his own.
Sally Wilson was attracted to Tecumseh’s agenda of American removal,
as did her brothers. She was awarded a grant by the British in 1823 but
may not have received it before passing away.

The following from Margaret McGrath on Tuesday, February 12, 2002:
I believe that I sent to you the following from the William Walker
Correspondence from the Draper Manuscript Collection, Frontier Wars,
Vol. 11, Documents 1-102, at the State Historical Library, Madison, Wisc.:
.......................It should be borne in mind
that Michigan Wyandotts were prisoners at that time. We resided near
Malden or Amherstburg. In May 1813, we obtained permission to move
over to Gros Isle (correct spelling is Grosse Ile), an island on the
American side, in order to raise what garden products we could on Wm.
Macomb's farm which had been abandoned. Macomb's large dwelling
was occupied by Geo. Blue Jacket, (son of the celebrated Blue Jacket of
olden times) and
family, and his sister, Mrs. Sallie Wilson and family. Councils
were frequently held at this house, being more retired. My mother
frequently visited the Blue Jacket family and especially her esteemed
friend, Sallie Wilson..........................The Sallie Wilson spoken
of above was once the wife of Col. Short who was killed in the sortie
upon Fort McPherson in June 1813. He was a Lieut. Col. in the
British Army. He went to England on a furlough, and not returning
for several years, she married again. They had one son, Thomas
Short, now deceased. (letter from Wm. Walker to Lyman
C. Draper, Esq.)

(5) George
Blue Jacket, son of Blue Jacket and Ms Baby, was born ca 1781
at Blue Jackets Town on the Mad River drainage and married an unknown
spouse. George died ca 1829 at Piqua OH as related in his son George’s
1829 manuscript, An Indians Own Story. Excepting his father, George must
be the greatest Blue Jacket extant. All males with the name Blue Jacket
living today, descend from George. Some living males and females carry
the name but their fathers are or were, not Blue Jackets. Conversely,
living children whose fathers are Blue Jackets, now carry other names.
What a man!

ll*John Blue Jacket b. 1816 d.
13*Charles Blue Jacket b. 1817 d. 29 Oct 1897
(1362) Un-named Blue Jacket,
son of Blue Jacket and Ms Baby Unknown died in 1813 in Ohio. See
previous (1327) Unknown on Page 4.
This child was killed in1813 by Delaware Indians because he was,
according to them, coming to assassinate William Henry Harrison (Letters
to the Secretary of War, 1813, Vol. 7, Pa t 3, Ohio Historical Society,
1961, p. 32-3.3.Harrison to Armstrong). Again, work needs to be done on
the two unknowns and on Joseph’s demise.

(387) Henry Stewart, son of James
and Nancy (Blue Jacket) Stewart.
(388) Elizabeth Stewart, daughter
of James and Nancy (Blue Jacket) Stewart.
(389) Margaret Stewart, daughter
of James and Nancy (Blue Jacket) Stewart.
(390) Joseph M. Stewart, son of
James and Nancy (Blue Jacket) Stewart.
Note on the Stewart family: All appear to have been born in the
Virginia of the Moore family and about 1804 the whole kit and caboodle,
Margaret (Peggy) Moore, Nancy (Moore) Stewart, her husband James and the
four children packed up and moved to Logan Co. Ohio. They blended in with
that community; however, their Shawnee blood appears to have been the
strongest. Perhaps that is why they moved. No grandchildren apparently
ensued, so the Margaret Moore line ends here.
(7) Nancy Blue Jacket, daughter of
James Blue Jacket and his Wyandot wife. Nancy died before Apr 1876 in
Wyandotte Co., KS. Nancy Blue Jacket's death place found in Kansas State
Historical Society, Topeka, KS - see Indians - Shawnee, Box 6. Her Indian
name was Wa-na-se. Nancy never married.
(1323) James
(Jim) Blue Jacket , son of James Blue Jacket and his Wyandot wife,
probably was born around at the turn of the 19th century in the
Maumee Rapids area and married about 1830 in Shawnee Reserve KS Terr.,
(1324) Pa-tex-ie. James (Jim) died about 1848 in Shawnee Reserve KS Terr.
Pa-tex-ie died ca 1852 in Shawnee Reserve KS Terr. Placement of this child
is based on two depositions of Mary (Blue Jacket) Rogers. One was her
statement that she was the only surviving child of James (Jim) Blue Jacket
and the other that she was the only surviving heir of Nancy Blue Jacket.
James (Lim) Blue Jacket is listed as a soldier in the Seminole War in
1837/38. Name and date of death is from a deposition of the Shawnee Chiefs
regarding their knowledge of the truth of statement by Mary (Blue Jacket)
Rogers.
Children:
1325*Mary Blue Jacket b.ca 1835 d. 25 Nov 1883
James (Jim) Blue Jacket also married (629) Math-Ah-Pease. She had
peviously married Rev. Lewis McNiff and by him had a daughter, Emily.
Math-Ah-Pease’s McNiff daughter was called Emily Blue Jacket and she
married Joseph Nipp.

THIRD GENERATION
(10) Henry
Blue Jacket, son of George Blue Jacket and Spouse Unknown, was born
around the turn of the 17th/18th centuries and
married 16 Mar 1843 in Shawnee Mission, Johnson Co., KS, (15) Eliza who
was born about 1818. Henry died 3 May 1855 at Blue Jackets Crossing of the
Waukarusa River, Kansas Terr. (now Johnson Co.).
When Henry was born is not accurately known, therefore, he may or may
not have been the first of George’s brood. He likely was born in the
lower Huron River area of Michigan Terr. Henry went to Washington DC in
1854 where he signed the Shawnee Treaty with his brothers George and
Charles. His last child was born after Henry died. Folks, Henry’s
descendants needs help on his history!
Eliza died about 1865. Her Indian Name - Cho-wa-pea (Info from Jean
Meek). She apparently married previously since the 1857(c) Roll lists a
George Sarcoxie (Lacoxie) as her son, who was born about 1836. This son
was apparently raised in the Blue Jacket home and used the name Blue Jacket.
Eliza's birth from 1857(c) Roll. Death dates from Federal Records Center,
microfilm #234, Roll 814. Shortly before Eliza's death, she married Eli
Blackhoof.

270*Emma Blue Jacket b. ca 1854 d. 1916

(8) George Blue Jacket, son of
George Blue Jacket and Spouse Unknown, was born about 1802, probably in
Blue Jacket’s Town in southeast Michigan Terr. and married (519) Mary
Blackhoof. George died Nov 1867 in Johnson Co. Kansas. George Blue Jacket's
Indian name was Na-wah-tah-thu.
George wrote "An Indian's Own Story" in 1829 in
Wapaughkonnetta, Ohio. In that manuscript he stated: "I was born two
winters after the Gim-o-wane Al-ag-wa at our Peq-uaw town on Big Miami Se-pe
(river)." The event was the "rain of stars" and the place
was Piqua and the two do not fit together. The date is well documented.
The magnificent Leonid Meteor Shower was observed on November 12, 1799 by
botanists Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt of Germany and
Goujaud Aimé J. A. Bonpland in Cumana, South America and Andrew Ellicott,
who was aboard ship at the edge of the Gulf Stream off Florida. The
periodicity of the Leonids is such that every 33 years are those times
when "stars rain" in November. Upwards of 100,000 meteors per
hour can be seen for a short time every 33 years, excepting some when the
elliptical orbit just misses the Earth’s atmosphere. This phenomena has
been traced back as far as 902 AD. As a result, George’s birth can be
either 1802 or 1803.
{p8}
In 1802-03, George’s family was farming among the Wyandots on the
south bank of the Huron River in southeast Michigan Terr. His next
sentence reads: "My father was Head-Chief then at that town"
(Pea-quaw). In his manuscript, George did not distinguish the use of
"father". He called his father "father" and his
grandfather, Blue Jacket, "father". He called the Piqua Agency
agent, John Johnson, his "White Father." George Blue Jacket, son
of Blue Jacket, was not a Head-Chief, but Chief Blue Jacket was the leader
of Blue Jacket’s Town just north of the Huron River, near Brownstown
when his grandson was born. Blue Jacket died in about 1808, before the
Huron area Shawnees moved back to northwest Ohio.
The 1857(c) Roll shows him as 42 years old (2 years older than Charles
who was born in 1816). Did he know more in 1857 about his early life? Did
he remember less? Or, did the scribe enter 42 rather than 55 for whatever
reason? What a difference 1857 minus 1829 brings. George is referred to in
Henry Harvey's "History of the Shawnee Indians", date of
publication 1854. It says he is the brother of Charles. (mw) George was a
signer of the Treaty of 1854.

Journeycake was a chief of the Delaware tribe. His Indian name was
Ne-sha-pa-na-cumin. He translated at the Shawnee Mission Methodist Church
for the Delaware. No children of this marriage in these records.
(11) John Blue Jacket, son
of George and Spouse Unknown Blue Jacket, was born in 1816 and married (16)
Mary. John Blue Jacket's Indian name was U-Kal-We. In 1838 he was appointed

(13) Charles
Blue Jacket, son of George Blue Jacket and
spouse unknown, was born about 1816 in the River Huron, Michigan Territory
area, and married about 1833, (17) Pa-Wa-Se. Charles died 29 Oct
1897 in Blue Jacket, Indian Territory, and was buried in Blue Jacket, Craig
Co., IT. Pa-Wa-Se died about 1841.
Charles Blue Jacket's Indian name - Kal-we. He married three times and
is said to have provided this world with 23 children. To date, we can
account for 20. He became a Methodist minister and, at the Shawnee
Methodist Mission in Kansas City, translated sermons for the Shawnee with
Charles Journeycake for the Delaware. Charles was a government interpreter
and the last chief of the Shawnee tribe. His interpretative skills were
used at the signing of the Shawnee Treaty of 1854 in Washington DC>
Pa-wa-se was baptized 24 Aug 1841 at the Shawnee Mission Methodist
Church. Her son, Robert Blue Jacket, was also baptized that same day. There
is a name "Ma-ci-wa-pea-ski-kill" on the line following Pa-wa-se
and just before Robert's name. Is this perhaps one of the names of the
three missing children born. to Charles?
Children:
18*Robert Blue Jacket b. 1 Apr 1840 d. 25 Mar 185a
He also married 25 Mar 1843 in Shawnee Mission, Johnson Co., KS Terr.,

11 Jul 1870 and was buried in Shawnee Cem., Johnson Co., KS. Julia Ann
Daugherty's Indian name - Wah-nah-ta-the-qua
Charles, along with his brother Henry, was baptized into the Shawnee
Mission Methodist Church on 13 Feb 1842. This same register shows Charles
marriage to Julia as Indian names, Kal-we to Wi-ni-ta-be-kwa.
In a letter to Joab Spencer dated 17 June 1907, Sallie (Blue Jacket)
Gore relates that her mother, Julia Ann Daugherty, had 13 children by
Charles. As of 10 Dec 1995, the Blue Jacket genealogical group could only
account for Ten.

Assumption, Sandwich, Canada, (103) Thomas Caldwell who was born 17 Sep
1788 in Assumption, Sandwich, Canada. Thomas Caldwell, his marriage and
children taken from Genealogy of the French Families of the Detroit River
Region by Dennison. He was the son of William Caldwell and Susanne Baby
dit Duperon, half-sister to Ms Baby, the second wife of Chief Blue Jacket.
Maryanne’s birth date is questionable. According to the baptismal
certificate, she is the daughter of Jacques Lasselle but the name of the
mother is not recorded. Maryanne died 31 Dec 1881.
